Global Goods Forges University Partnerships for Global Justice
Global Goods Partners collaborated with three universities this fall to promote fair trade and global justice on campus.
Supporting Fair Trade on Campus
In December 2006, the Oxfam chapter at New York University (NYU) hosted its second annual Fair Trade Holiday Market in partnership with the New York City Fair Trade Coalition. Global Goods was invited to participate as one of a handful of socially responsible vendors. A percentage of the funds from the sale of Global Goods products was donated to Oxfam NYU for their campus activism. The NYU chapter is a dedicated group of students committed to promoting fair trade and global justice both on campus and in New York City. Funds will be used to support continued advocacy to make more fair trade products available on campus and to support awareness raising events like the upcoming Fair Trade Fashion Show in April (link).
Raising Funds for Alternative Breaks Brown University Hillel students needed to raise funds this fall to participate in a service-learning trip to Thailand with American Jewish World Service. Raising funds to participate in a community development project one student said: “It just makes so much sense to do a fundraiser that raises awareness and addresses the same issues.” Students sold Global Goods items at a holiday fair and at the campus Human Rights Film Festival.
Students Support Grassroots Development Students at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut started a Global Goods Partners club this past fall. Working in collaboration with student groups on campus, including the Amnesty International chapter, they promoted fair trade products at human rights events. The money raised was donated to GGP’s Community Fund, which provides small grants to our partner CBOs.
