Afghan Partner Receives International Activist Award
Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, founder and executive director of the Afghan Institute of Learning, and one of GGP’s first global partners, was honored with the 2007 Gleitsman International Activist Award by Harvard’s Kennedy School for Public Leadership on December 4th. Dr. Yacoobi is being honored for her tireless work to bring education, health, and human rights training to women and children across Afghanistan, risking her life to organize underground schools for women and children while Afghanistan was under Taliban control.
As violence and war continue long after the Taliban’s expulsion from Afghanistan, Yacoobi continues to set up schools across the country. GGP is proud to be a partner of Dr. Yacoobi whose exceptional dedication and commitment to transforming Afghan society and restoring women’s rights is an example of the enormous impact that an individual can have in creating positive social change.
