Melati is a fair trade microenterprise that works with women in Jakarta who collect coffee sachets and detergent packets to make unique, colorful bags and accessories.  The cooperative is a project of the Indonesia branch of Mercy Corps, a large international not-for-profit organization dedicated to building strong communities and alleviating suffering and poverty in the developing world. Jakarta, like sprawling, overpopulated cities throughout the developing world, faces severe poverty, lack of economic opportunity and environmental devastation. Melati 12 is a microenterprise that addresses these concerns holistically. The cooperative provides employment for women in some of the city’s worst slums, training them to create crafts out of plastic waste that would otherwise end up in dangerous landfills. Melati 12 promotes environmental awareness, gives waste products an economic value for poor communities and redefines women’s role in society through income generation. While Melati 12 currently works with a small number of artisans, its goal is to expand its reach and accumulate enough capital to provide training workshops for more women. Melati 12 is one of several grassroots partners of Mercy Corps Indonesia, an initiative dedicated to addressing improvements in nutrition and health for children under five, and promoting environmental campaigns such as improved water sanitation and waste management.
