Mujeres Unidas (Women United) started more than a decade ago as a collective of 13 women, following a community needs assessment carried out by staff of Socios en Salud, the Peruvian branch of Partners in Health. Located in the shantytown of Carabayllo, Peru (located on the central coast), Mujeres Unidas first began producing handmade crafts in 2000. The founding members were living without water, electricity or proper shelter. With money raised through sales of their crafts they were able provide vital resources to their families. Mujeres Unidas also offers lessons in leadership, teamwork and financial management. The profits from craft sales are used to help improve the educational opportunities of children in their community and construct and repair housing.
