RK is a social enterprise that works with marginalized ethnic minorities in Western India to create beautiful batik scarves with unique and complex designs.  The organization name means “the art of the desert” and is a social enterprise providing sustainable income generation opportunities in Western India’s Kutch District. The organization was founded in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that struck Western India in 2001 and severely damaged the already weak local economy. With its emphasis on skills training and product development, Rann Kala’s income generation efforts have driven substantive social change in the region. The extra income from craft development brings the women artisans greater respect from their families and community. After working with the organization, many women have become empowered to travel outside of their homes, which, due to gender inequities, was difficult to do before. Other families are able to send their children to school with the money they earn from craft production.
