Chocofibres

Chocofibres is a women's cooperative that creates eco-friendly bags using fiber from tree bark and natural dyes bought from indigenous groups in the Colombian jungle.

Chocofibres is a project in Colombia that creates livelihood opportunities for artisans and their families in Colombia's most violent region, particularly to those displaced by violence and to the marginalized population of Afro-Colombias who face severe discrimination. This impoverished region is largely neglected by the government, receives little funding, lacks roads and other infrastructure, and is mostly isolated from the outside world.

Chocofibres is organized as a cooperative of 50 women heads of households in the towns of Quibdo and Istmina. Artisans receive training in design, product development, marketing, business development, pricing, distribution, environmental stewardship and other areas that enable them to take full control of production. In addition to revitalizing traditional regional craft and providing an alternative source of income, Chocofibres supports a strong social mission of obtaining access to education for children and adults; access to health services for those who would otherwise lack access; and providing sanitation and health information to the program's participants.

The Craft Process

Women in Choco gather at the Chocofibres workshop to craft a variety of beautiful products out of natural materials. Global Goods Partners features a collection of bags from palm tree fiber known as Damagua. The group of artisans strips the fiber from the tree bark and carefully washes the fibers in preparation for sewing. Whenever possible, if not hindered by ongoing violence in the region, Chocofibres artisans buy natural dyes from indigenous groups in the jungle to paint the unique designs that adorn these eco-friendly bags.
