Maasai Women Development Organisation

Maasai Women's Development Organization (MWEDO) works with the semi-nomadic Maasai of Tanzania, boosting development through the production and sale of traditional beaded ornaments, jewelry, and home accents. Founded in 2000, MWEDO provides human rights education, adult literacy and girls education, and health services. It trains women in leadership and business skills as well as craft development. MWEDO encourages the formation of women’s cooperatives and provides training, materials, and marketing assistance that contribute to the success of income-generating operations.

The Maasai

The Maasai are a semi-nomadic ethnic group that lives along the Great Rift Valley in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. Several centuries ago, the Maasai inhabited vast amounts of territory in the region. Now, due to large-scale agriculture, business developments, and expansion of wildlife reserves and national parks, they have slowly been pushed into more arid regions, endangering their traditional nomadic and subsistence farming way of life. The Maasai that have resisted now live in extremely remote areas where economic opportunity, education, and public services are scarce.
