Ak’Tenamit
Guatemala
Ak’Tenamit promotes the self-determination of the Maya Q’eqshi people in 36 communities of Rio Dulce, Livingston in Guatemala. The organization supports a number of development programs in health, HIV/ AIDS, agriculture, conservation, Mayan spirituality, gender equity, sustainable economic development, primary and secondary education, and crafts production. Ak’Tenamit provides schooling for over 400 youth, ages 14-2 living in remote communities. These young people receive training in community development and complete local community development projects as a graduation requirement. The skills they learn enable them to be active leaders in their communities — acquiring both knowledge of Mayan tradition and professional skills.
