Asociación de Artesanos Indigenas Zenú de San Antonio de Palmito

Colombia

For more than 150 families in San Antonio de Palmito in rural, western Colombia, their livelihoods are linked to the Asociación de Artesanos Indigenas Zenú (AZENUPAL). Collectively, the community creates a line of products made from cana fleche, an indigenous plant from which a smooth fiber is produced through a delicate process of cutting and drying. The fiber is then set with dyes made from local plants, bark, seeds, and herbs. The community grows some food for their own consumption but money for school, housing and additional food is generated solely through the sale of their handcrafted products.
