Ikamva Labantu
South Africa
Based in Cape Town, Ikamva Labantu serves as a development catalyst for community-based social service programs throughout South Africa. Founded by a community activist in the 1960s to redress the injustices of apartheid, Ikamva Labantu today delivers a comprehensive set of services including health care, food security, education, and job training. Before apartheid laws were dismantled in the early 1990s, Ikamva Labantu supported training centers, home industries and small businesses in impoverished communities. Those initiatives led to the establishment of Community Creations and its affiliated skills training workshop, which produce a range of home accessories, toys, beadwork and Judaica products. Community Creations employs disadvantaged and disabled people from neighboring townships.
