Joyeria Semilla
Colombia
Joyeria Semilla is a small, fair-trade workshop in the Andean town of Villa de Leyva, Colombia, founded to provide employment to marginalized people in the community. Joyeria Semilla trains disadvantaged and at-risk youth, single women, former sex-workers, ex-convicts, and beggars in the art of jewelry-making and allows them to earn an income in a safe learning environment. When funds are available, the workshop also provides a daily meal and housing to the neediest of its workers. Combining traditional Colombian seed art and modern trends, the jewelry is made from seeds, stones, and other natural materials collected from the local environment.
