Association for the Improvement of Women’s Status: Lakia

Israel

Founded to serve Israel’s Bedouin community, Lakia offers employment, literacy, and health education to 160 women while providing kindergarten for their young children. A traditionally nomadic population, Bedouins face a number of challenges as they transition to a more stable and urban lifestyle. Women, in particular face high unemployment and a decrease in their social and economic rights. In addition to income generating work, women at Lakia participate in trainings on civil and political rights and form informal support networks amongst themselves.
