Pueblo a Pueblo
Guatemala
Pueblo a Pueblo facilitates access to services and resources for the largely Mayan population of Santiago, including the textile and bead artisans of the community. Located on the western shore of Lake Atitlán, the area suffered enormous economic, political, and human hardship in the 1980s and 1990s during Guatemala’s civil war. The region was once again devastated in October 2005 as mudslides, triggered by tropical Storm Stan, killed several hundred T’zujil Mayans and left an estimated 5,000 people homeless and without health care.
