Streetwires
South Africa
Streetwires provides skills training, support, and raw materials to over 100 formerly unemployed women and men in Cape Town and rural Clanwilliam. In addition, the organization develops community leaders to take over management of local Streetwires centers and demonstrates to the broader community that it is possible to start a successful business despite challenging circumstances. Wire art is made from wire, beads, cans, and other found, recycled items. The craft developed in rural Maputoland and Zululand where children began making wire toys because they lacked the resources to buy manufactured toys. Recognizing children’s ingenuity, older community members began making their own wire arts to sell—everything from jewelry to working radios.
