As a matter of principle and as a member of the Fair Trade community, Global Goods Partners is committed to supporting and promoting the self-sustainability of our community based organization (CBO) partners. With the proceeds from product sales and directed contributions, we make grants to our producer CBOs. These grants focus on strengthening the capacity of their microenterprise operations and their community development programs.
Global Goods Partners also provides technical assistance to its CBO partners, such as product development expertise, quality control and product marketing.
Grant Recipients
• Chocofibres, Colombia, for building a secure workshop space in a conflict area where women artisans can congregate to produce their crafts, discuss and share their personal stories and receive health education and services from a local NGO.
• Artisans' Association of Cambodia (AAC), Cambodia, for marketing initiatives. AAC acquired a boutique space in Phnom Penh to showcase the work of member organizations located in rural provinces. The boutique provides exposure and increased sales potential for groups with otherwise limited market access.
• Foundation for Development of Needy Communities (FDNC), Uganda, for Bye Kamahono, FDNC's art and design center. FDNC employs a part-time instructor at the center, is creating a workshop on quality control, and is providing materials and supplies for student participants.
• Kachin Women's Association of Thailand (KWAT), Thailand-Burma Border, for income generation programs for Kachin women from Burma living in Chiang Mai and Chiang Dao. KWAT is training women in outlying provinces in traditional doll making, providing them with sustained employment. The organization is also evaluating product marketability.
• Association for Improvement of the Status of Women - Lakia, Israel, for a new income generation program for Bedouin women. Lakia is instituting a new program to train women in traditional Bedouin jewelry production while also providing access to trainings in women's rights, health care, literacy, childcare and economic empowerment.
• Minga Peru, Peru, for support for indigenous artisans in the Peruvian Amazon. Minga Peru is strengthening craft sector development by training indigenous women artisans in the production of high-quality products made from environmentally sustainable local resources. Eco-friendly craft production is one part of a larger income generation program that supports marginalized indigenous communities in the Amazon. Revenue supports indigenous women human rights activists.
• Pampa Brava/Niwok Foundation, Argentina, for a reproductive health program for the indigenous Wichí community on the Argentina-Bolivia border. Pampa Brava is providing training to 40 young women and men in reproductive health and human rights. The health program also promotes dialogue, information exchange and further training of peers and families.
• Karen Women's Organization (KWO), Thailand-Burma Border, to strengthen the operation of the income generation program. KWO is providing training in weaving and product development for Burmese refugee women along the Thai-Burma border. With funds from GGP, KWO has purchased a loom and two sewing machines and provided transportation of KWO staff to and from the camps to provide support to the program.
• El Hombre Sobre la Tierra, A.C, Mexico, for market-readiness training. With funds from GGP, two staff from El Hombre Sobre la Tierra travelled to New York to attend an intensive training presented by Aid to Artisans in preparation for introducing their Mexican craft to the US market.
